Guided by Wesley Leon Aroozoo, Tracing the footsteps of Oseki and Gobind from The Punkhawala and the Prostitute took participants back to 1800’s Singapore to trace the footsteps of Oseki, the young Karayuki-San (Japanese Prostitute) and Gobind, the Indian convict from the Epigram Books Fiction Prize Finalist novel The Punkhawala and the Prostitute.
A guided and interactive walk around central Singapore through familiar places, participants kept an eye out for evidence of the past that is still around as they uncovered where the forgotten ones such as the Karayuki-sans and Indian Convicts once lived their harsh lives. Together with Wesley, participants had a chance to celebrate them as part of Singapore’s young but very diverse history and gain insights into how Wesley translates Singapore's history into an art form.
